The Silent Badge: A Tale of War, Loss, and Remembrance

by | Nov 30, 2023

Tonight, I devoted time to reorganizing an album with photos documenting my father-in-law’s military service in World War II. He rarely spoke of his wartime experiences while he was alive.

We only learned about the photos after he had died. I wish he could share these photos and his memories with us.

I was always intrigued by a tattoo on his right lower inner arm. Whenever I asked about it, he would glance at it and change the subject. Even his sons were unaware of its origin or significance. It seemed out of character for him – he didn’t seem the type to get a tattoo.

As he reached his 90s, his health began to decline, starting with a broken hip. This injury marked the onset of a rapid deterioration, exacerbated by advancing dementia.

During a hospital visit after his hip surgery, a nurse noticed the tattoo and inquired about it while taking his blood pressure. It was then that he shared its story:

When he enlisted in the military, he was sent to Australia. He trained with his platoon and a larger company of soldiers there for several months.

Shortly before his company was deployed to the front lines, my father-in-law and two other soldiers contracted hepatitis and were hospitalized, left behind as their unit advanced.

Tragically, they soon learned that their entire company had been killed in action.

Stricken with grief over the loss of their friends, the three survivors, once recovered, went on a drinking spree. In a state of inebriation, they decided to get identical tattoos on their right arms, a military symbol, as a tribute to their fallen comrades.

After the hospitalization, my father-in-law remained in Australia until its conclusion. He served as a driver for a general.

His photo album mostly contains pictures of men he likely knew from his platoon, the one tragically lost. There are only a few images of him with military vehicles, some with nurses, and a few depicting a wedding between military personnel stationed in Australia.

These photos tell the story of a man who endured the trials of war, far from home and his loved ones, carrying memories that he held close but seldom shared.
